Today we honor a leader whose dream opened the door for many to pursue theirs. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day. Did you know he skipped grades? Find out that information and more in the I’ve put together of uncommon facts about one of America’s greatest heros.
1. His name was originally Michael, not Martin.
His father was also Michael King, hence why Martin Luther King Jr. was originally named Michael King Jr. However, after a trip to Germany in 1931, Michael King Sr. changed his own name in homage to historic German theologian Martin Luther. Michael King Jr. was two years old at the time and King Sr. made the decision to change his son’s name to Martin Luther as well.
2. King wasn’t the only one to die at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968.
After he was killed, one of the hotel workers, Lorraine Bailey (who was also the wife of the motel owner and who it was named after), upon seeing King get shot, had a heart attack and later died from this.
3. King Jr. skipped two grades in high school.
He skipped 9th and 11th, and entered college (Morehouse College) at the tender age of 15 in 1944. By 19, he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
His honeymoon was spent at a funeral parlor… not because someone died, simply because a friend owned the parlor and offered to let him use it for his honeymoon.
5. The famous words “I have a dream” were never actually included in the original text of his speech.
He revived this phrase from a previous speech that he had given, which had never resonated with his audience. Talk about a serious ad-lib.
GRAMBLING, La. (AP) — Naquan Smith and his Grambling football teammates have no regrets about a nearly weeklong boycott that forced the university to forfeit its game against Jackson State on Saturday.
Grambling players stood behind Smith Monday during a press conference outside of the Eddie Robinson Museum on campus. Smith said the entire team was present and that the vote to return to the field was “100 percent.”
“The football team took a stance on what we thought was right,” Smith said. “We did not quit on our university. There are many problems that exist and if no one says anything, nothing will become of our institution. We hope coach Eddie Robinson and his legendary players appreciate we took a stand and thought we were right.”
Smith said players decided end the boycott after reaching out to several Grambling greats, including former coach Doug Williams, who advised them to…

Good Life Productions brought comedian and Academy Award winning actress Mo’Nique to Baton Rouge for the first time and Good Life gave myself and I.D.D.O. Productions exclusive access to the event.
The comedian then took the stage at the Baton Rouge river center to headline the Mo’Nique & Friends Comedy Show. The audience was not only entertained by the queen herself, but also with performances comedians from Tone X and David Arnold.
Sometimes parents look at me like I told their child “Santa doesn’t exist “when I tell their children “No you can’t play with Uncle Cam’s phone”. The next time I get that “look” or anyone goes to give a fussy toddler their phone I’ll be sure to tell them Paul Stoute’s story.
The Portland father got the shock of his life after discovering his one-year-old daughter had bought him a car on eBay.
Stoute told Portland’s KPTV that he received a notice from eBay congratulating him on his purchase of a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite for $225.
After verifying the purchase, Stoute realized that his young daughter, who really enjoys playing with daddy’s smartphone, had logged into the eBay app which can be used to instantly make a purchase.
“I contacted the seller right away to [see] if he could contact the previous bidder to see if he would take it,” he said to ABC news
But all’s well that ends well, Paul and his wife Christina said that they’re going to turn Sorella’s mistake into the best present ever.
Stoute says he plans on keeping the car – which was listed as a “fixer upper” – and fix it up in time for her 16th birthday or graduation.
This afternoon when I heard Mo’Nique would be making an appearance in the Capitol city ,and Good Life Production would be responsible for bringing the Queen to her subjects in Baton Rouge I had to call them to the official details.
Here they are:
Academy Award-winning actress a.k.a. the Queen of Comedy ,Mo’Nique will make her Baton Rouge debut when she headlines Monique and Friends at the River Center on Saturday, August 17th.
“There have been a lot large scale concerts this summer ,but we haven’t had events for mature crowds to come out relax and enjoy themselves and this show provide them that experience” said Quincy Q Quiett , CEO of Good life productions.
Quiett said after bringing sought after musicians like Gucci Mane ,Rick Ross and Trina and controversial reality tv personalities such as Josline Hernandez and Stevie J during the summer there also need showcase diversity among the city’s nightlife.
It’s been 2 years BET cancelled her late night talk show and 4 years since her Oscar-winning performance in Lee Daniels’ Precious.
“We haven’t seen much of over the past couple of years but when you’ve built such great reputation and brand like Monquie’s you can take break your fans will anxiously await your return” said Quiett
Although the mother of three has been on a hiatus that doesn’t mean the queen has been lounging on her throne. This year Mo’Nique changed her diet , began exercising regularly and those changes yielded your highness an astonishing 82 lbs weight loss.
Although comedian’s waistline has gotten smaller she is still working on providing fans with big laughs. She currently touring and in the process of developing a new show with BET Networks.
“People can expect from this show what they will get every Good Life event not just a high quality show , but instead a high quality experience.”, said Quiett
I did my best to get all the details on the “friends” that will be joining Mo’Nique on stage ,but Q told me some thing’s are better left a surprise and we won’t be disappointed.
Tickets can purchased from now until the date of the show from any Ticketmaster, Wal-Mart or the River Center box office.
You’re welcome for the heads up.
Last year Dynasty 2259 was founded with goal of offering fresh pieces of clothing for our closets, but also to introduce us to the up and coming designers who create them. After losing her father to cancer Dynasyt’s Founder Manuela Gomez said it was his death that inspired her to go after her dream of fashion and build a company that inspires others to follow their dreams too. Dynasty refers to building a legacy that will last forever and 2259 refers to Gomez’s father’s birthday, which marks the beginning of the Dynasty.
After spending a year turning her dream into a reality , along with partners Yobi and musician Youth Soul Love, and building the Dynasty brand the group commemorated their anniversary with The One Fashion Show.
Dynasty chose the Galleria Mall in Houston as the backdrop for the brand to introduce us to their collection and collections from Liv Culture, IVSL and Dinero’s Closet. Although the event was gave us a peek at we need in our closets this summer ; it was also a chance to give back with proceeds from the show donated to The American Cancer Society.
The first annual One Fashion Show hosted by Dynasty was a stunning runway presentation of designers who were able to build a bridge between :popular styles of today and vintage looks from the past. I can’t wait to attend next year. For more information on Dynasty XXIILIX visit xxiilix.com . You’re welcome for the heads up!
A Greenwell Springs man upset about losing his job allegedly told law enforcement officers Thursday that God told him to bring a BB gun to the State Capitol.
Russell W. Vaughn faces charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace after creating concern about security measures at the State Capitol and annoying his neighbors.
State Police said they believe Vaughn is the man who carried a BB gun up the front steps of the State Capitol and pointed it at the building’s windows.
Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego, said he is uncertain whether it is even a crime to have a BB gun on the State Capitol grounds. He said his security team saw the man climbing the Capitol steps and intervened even though they were not armed.
